Copper is one of the most valuable and widely recycled metals, but not all copper scrap is treated the same. Knowing the different categories helps you understand what to expect when selling.
Bare bright copper is the highest grade — clean, uncoated copper wire with no insulation or contamination. It commands the best price because it can be processed directly. Insulated copper cable is also valuable, though the price reflects the cost of stripping and processing the insulation.
Copper pipes, tubing and busbars are common in plumbing and electrical work. These are usually graded based on their condition and whether they are clean or have solder, fittings or other attachments. Mixed copper scrap, which combines several forms, is assessed at a blended rate.
Whatever type of copper you have, a professional buyer will evaluate it transparently and explain how the grade affects the final price.
